UGC - Centre for Women's Studies
Centre for Women's studies (CWS) sponsored by the University Grants Commission has been established under XI Five Year Plan (2009) has been operational since 8 March 2010. The only one college in the entire state of Kerala got such a special recognition from UGC. Various Gender Sensitization Programmes and awareness classes for students, teachers, parents and community are the interior emphasize of the Centre for Women's Studies. The seminars and workshops completed under the aegis of the Centre for Women's Studies focused on Creating a Self- Autonomy among Women and Girls.
Center for Women's Studies employed an interdisciplinary approach in research, projects, orientation and awareness-building programmes, training Programmes. By facilitating research, extension works and Campus Film Festival on Women and their issues, centre for Women's Studies seek to enhance the visibility of women and gender issues inside the academic communities of the Universities, colleges and Local Communities. We have worked towards creating a platform for sensitizing parents of the students; members of self help groups and Schools in the Local Community.

Saying in nutshell, under the teaching programme CWS aims at to create awareness and to make the students familiar with women's issues and women's rights and to enable them critically analyze the Women's issues from right perspectives.
I .Certificate Course in Gender Sensitization
The Centre conducts Certificate Course in Gender Sensitization for students at post graduate level. The course started during the academic year 2012 - 2013. Syllabi for this course is prepared with the help of external faculties and are regularly reviewed and updated. This course provided a basic understanding to the students about the Concept of gender, Feminist theories, Women and law, leadership and communication skills, self defense moves and reproductive health and healthy living practices with a special focus on India. The participants are evaluated on the basis of examinations.
II. Training programs
- The center conducted a free tailoring training to women between 18 and 40 years on 20th January 2020 on wards
- UGC Centre for Women studies conducted a cloth bag & paper bag making training for housewives and paliativecare patients.The training enhanced the skills and helped them for self-employability.
UGC Centre for Women studies in collaboration with KILA organised a three day workshop on capacity building of elected women representatives in kerala with special focus on thrissur district.The program was inagurated by Krishnankutty,Corporation Ward Councellor, thrissur on 4/12/2018.Dr.sankar(former professor & scientist,dept of social science),Rismiya(training associate at IKM),Prof.Nirmala (vice president of JCI),Mr.Jomy P L,director(IMS),Mr.Ajith Kumar Menon(KILA),Dr.Bindu R(Associate professor,Dept of English,Kerala varma College) were the resource persons.

Inauguration of UGC Centre for Women Studies for the academic year 2019 -2020
As part of the inaugural ceremony of UGC Centre for Women Studies for the academic year 2019 -2020 inagurated by Vijaya Raja Mallika. Dr. Joycee T.O (Vice Principal) welcomed the crowd. The presidential address was delivered by Dr. Sr. Namitha Jose,Vice Principal. The resource person interacted with the students. Students presented their ideas and asked for clarifications regarding the experience of Vijaya Raja Mallika about the transformation from man to women
One day gender film festival
The women study centre of vimala college (Autonomous) conducted “One Day Gender Film Festival” on July 29,2019 at Silver Jubilee Seminar Hall.The welcome address was given by Dr.Sinto P Anto,UGC Centre for Women Studies.K.C Santhosh Kumar,Director ,MAYA gave an introduction to the festival.The presidential address was delivered by Dr.Mini mol K Joseph,Vice Principal,Vimala College.The film festival was formally inaugurated with an inaugural address by Dr.Asha Achi Joseph,Film maker and Dean,school of communication of sacred Heart College,Thevara.The inaugural function came to an end with the vote of thanks given by Dr.Treesa T Pulikal, Joint Director,UGC Centre for women studies.First section of film screening started with the documentary “period-End of Sentence “ directed by Rayka Zehtabchi,followed by the screening of “one woman” (music video).Second section started with the screening of “my sacred glass bond” directed by Priya Thuvassery,followed by “Break the chain”,Metro Girl” (music video) and “printed rainbow”,an animation short film by Githanjali Rao.
One day workshop on "personality and career development"
UGC Centre for women studies and National Child Development Council conducted a one day workshop on personality and career development workshop for women on 24th September 2019. Dr. Sinto P Anto, Director UGC Centre for Women’s Studies, welcomed the audience. Dr. Sr. Beena Jose, Principal, inaugurated the one day workshop. She enlightened the students with the importance of personality development. The workshop mainly consists two sessions. First session has done by Baba Alexander. He put forward a theme that One World, One Language & a Global Country. He divided the participants in to three groups according to their academic year and assigned tasks to them. The captains of each group created a sign in and sign off style which helps to remove shyness and stage fear among students. He also introduced some games, which help to improve English language skills. second session handled by Dr. Sruthi Ganesh, Program Coordinator at NCDC. She lectured about the career and personality development and also provides simple tips to enhance the interview skills. She stated that, a person’s personality is quite important in winning success in life. Students asked their doubts regarding on job interviews and gestures that keep during interviews. The session was very informative and inspiring. The session concluded with a vote of thanks, which was delivered by Tressa T Pullickal, Joint Director, at UGC Centre for Women’s Studies.
Seminar on menstruation and personal hygiene for students’ parents
UGC Centre for Women Studies and Alumnae Association have organised a talk by Dr.Rajathan on 04/09/2019 at Vimala College (Autonomous) auditorium for first year PG and UG students’ parents. The session was followed by the Welcome speech by Dr.Mimi Mani Panackal, Asst. Professor, at Dept. of Hindi. She gave an overview about the resource person. The session started by putting up some questions related to the basic concepts of personal hygiene. Then, he asked participants about the importance of early wakeup. Participants shared their views and ideas about it. The session moved on to many areas of discussions including significance of sunlight, exercise, nutritients and on controversial concepts on junk food. The time constrain made the session too short. It was a wonderful session. The session ended up as an eye opener to everone as it made them realise the importance of improving health. The session concluded by Vote of Thanks by Dr.Sinto P Anto, Asst. Professor, at Dept. of psychology.
Women's Day Celebrations
UGC Centre for women's studies celebrated international women's day on 6th march 2020.The program was inaugurated by Smt.Rema Sivaram,a social entrepreneur and former student of Vimala College.Various programmes were organized in lieu to celebrate the glard day lead by UGC Centre for Women Studies,Vimala College (Autonomous).The Celebration began with a flash mob conducted on 5th march 2020.The formal inauguration of the programme was conducted on 6th March 2020.With the winding up of the formal session the platform was open for a wide range of programmes conducted by students of Vimala College.Amusical drama by the students of social work department tried to address different problems faced by the women in the contemporary society
International Yoga Day celebration
The International Yoga Day was celebrated in the college on 21st June, 2019 by the UGC Centre for Women’s Studies in co-ordination with the Field Information Bureau. Dr. Sinto P Anto, Director UGC Centre for Women’s Studies, welcomed the crowd. The presidential address was delivered by Mr. George Mathew, Asst. Director, Field Information Bureau. Dr. Sr. Beena Jose, Principal, inaugurated the day’s celebration. Dr. Sr. Beena enlightened the audience with the importance of yoga. It was followed by the prize distribution for the essay writing competition conducted in connection with the Yoga Day. The honours were done by Dr. Sr. Beena. It was followed by a lecture on yoga and demonstration by the Thrissur Yoga Association. The session was very informative and inspiring. It inspired the students and the staff to make yoga a part of their daily life. The session concluded with a vote of thanks which was delivered by Mr. Amjit
One day workshop on "Basic Concepts of Queerness and Oppression"
UGC Center for Women’s Studies of Vimala College (Autonomous), Thrissur in collaboration with Sahayatrika, Thrissur organized a one day workshop on ‘Basic Concepts of Queerness and Oppression ‘ on 21st November, 2019 from 12:30 pm to 3:00pm at Lisieux Hall . The workshop began by evoking the blessing of all mighty followed by a Welcome Address by Dr. Sinto P. Anto (Director, UGC Center for Women’s Studies). Inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Sr. Beena Jose (Principal, Vimala College(Autonomous ), who highlighted on the need for an understanding on basic concept of queerness and oppression in present scenario. Technical session for the day was divided between three resource persons. The first session was handled by Mrs. Beena Beuna (Queer Activist) who spoke on multiple dimensions of queerness and oppression. The axioms at which the workshop held was, Introduction to Gender Studies, Feminism, Queer Theories, Gender and history of Sahayatrika. Second section was handled by Harimizhi. K, who is a renowned Transwoman Activist who spoke regarding Transgender Protection Bill and Kerala Transgender Policy. She also highlighted the need and role of the government in protecting their rights. As a ploughed ground for next session a documentary film named “That’s My Boy” was screened, which discussed the courageous life of a Transman named Sonu, which sowed a new kind of survival and victory among students. Final session for the day was handled by Mr. Praveen Nath a Transman Activist, who shared his various stages of revelations which was challenging while in search of his identity . He life too was challenging and his story of survival was yet another added milestone in the transgender history of survival. The sessions were winded up with a healthy discussion on various queries aroused in the minds of young scholars . The day was immemorable chapter in the great annals of Vimala College.
